Shampooing hair itself is a quick and easy process but it’s what entails after, that can be a deterrent for those who require heavy hair styling and maintenance. Nevertheless, there are several good reasons for not dodging shampoo duties.
5 reasons for not skipping your shampoo routine
1. Cleaning out oils, residues and dirt from hair
Shampoos consist of surfactants whose job consist of adhering to greasy and stubborn residues on the hair, breaking them down and ‘extracting’ them into the water. The picture below best explains how the surfactants work. Surfactants usually consist of a water loving part (hydrophilic) and a water repelling (hydrophobic) part. The job of the water repelling part is to attach to things that dislike water as well such as dirt or oils, while the water loving part (usually negatively charged) remains exposed in the water. The surfactants eventually get rinsed away along with the trapped residues in the form of micelles. The end result is clean dirt free hair.
2. Maintaining a healthy scalp
Like I explained above, shampoos will dislodge all the residues that do not get rinsed out easily with water alone. However this does not happen on the hair only, but, on the skin as well. A clean scalp is particularly important for it to remain healthy. Many problems such as overly greasy scalp, dandruff, inflammations etc can stem from unwanted debris on the scalp. Sometimes other problems such as hair loss emerge from the irritated skin.
3. Depositing essential ingredients
Many shampoo formulations nowadays do not only cleanse, but also leave behind useful ingredients such as conditioning agents, oils, anti dandruff agents etc. These ingredients are delivered in small amounts and enhance the overall shampooing experience. After all, who wants squeaky clean, tangled, dry hair?
4. Leaving the hair fresh
Hair feels, looks and smells clean after a shampoo. Debris on hair and scalp affects all of these features. As you can imagine, dirty hair looks greasy and dull, and feels coated. The scalp on the other hand starts to emit non desiring smells after a while.
5. Acting as a stress reliever
The massaging and lathering process of shampooing can create a relaxed feeling, especially if one gets shampooed in the salon. Although, it is not as effective as a full body massage, the whole process of getting pampered in a salon can lower the stress hormones to a significant level.
