Hair loss or Alopecia is a frustrating problem with a major psychological impact on those affected by it. Much research and effort is ongoing to find a definitive cure that doesn’t involve expensive surgeries, or major side effects. One of the latest ingredients introduced on the market is Capixyl, said to be comparable with Minoxidil, without the side effects.
What is Capixyl?
Capixyl is a blend of Water, Butylene Glycol, Dextran, Acetyl Tetrapeptide-3 and Trifolium Pratense [(Clover) Flower Extract]. Water and butylene glycol are solvents for the active ingredients highlighted, while Dextran which is a high molecular weight sugar is used as a thickener/viscosity enhancer.
Acetyl Tetrapeptide-3 is said to be a biomimetic signal peptide. In simple words a biomimetic peptide is a laboratory synthesized peptide that mimics the behavior of a natural peptide present in the body. In this case, the biomimetic peptide, Acetyl Tetrapeptide-3, targets the healing of tissues.
The red clover extract is rich in biochanin A, a phytoestrogen flavonoid with documented health promoting activities.
The efficacy of Capixyl
In their research study, the team determines that the combination the peptide and the red clover extract produce a synergistic effect to help the hair follicles in various ways:
- It is said to have a direct action on 5-∝-reductase (enzyme) which modulates dihydrotestosterone (DHT) to help prevent hair follicle miniaturization. DHT causes hair loss by shortening the growth cycle, producing progressively shorter and finer hair.
- It improves ECM (extra cellular matrix) protein integrity in dermal papilla for a better hair anchoring. The studies seem to indicate that the hair follicles are longer and thicker with Capixyl treatment.
- It reduces damages caused by inflammation.
- It shows an increase in the anagen stage of hair growth, and a decrease in the telogen phase. In other words: more growth and less shedding when compared to the placebo test group.
Where can I find Capixyl?
The company sells this ingredient as a cosmetic active ingredient for formulation. In other words, it is being used by other brands in their formulations of shampoos, conditioners or serums to treat hair loss/hair damage. For hair loss, you might want to choose products where the Capixyl is among the first few (highest concentration is 5 %). Some of the well rated products with Capixyl (Acetyl Tetrapeptide-3 and Trifolium Pratense) on amazon are listed here:
Amplixin™ Hair Support System
Beauty Facial Extreme Maximum strength hair regrowth serum
The research above has a test group of 30 people. The results are not representative of the whole population of hair loss sufferers. I haven’t come across other publications with more clinical trials. Everyone has hair loss to different extents and for different persistent reasons. For some people, Capixyl might actually help hair grow back (as they seem to indicate in their studies), but bear in mind that it might not work for everyone. However, the numerous benefits of this ingredient seems to suggest that the products can help to at least maintain current hair health if not regrow hair. So it might be worth a try especially since there are no mentioned side-effects.
